Post Views: 6,410Vittorio Romano heard his three-year-old daughter crying before he understood what he was seeing.
“If she behaves like an animal,” Bianca said sarcastically, “she eats like one.”
Vittorio crossed the room immediately and lifted his daughter.
Lucy wrapped both arms around his neck.
“Daddy… But I’m a human being.”
Near the doorway, Emma stood trembling with a smartphone in her hands.
She showed Vittorio what she had recorded earlier.
On the screen, Bianca repeatedly forced Lucy’s face toward the bowl of dog food.
Then Marcus saw the phone.
He lunged for it.
Vittorio placed Lucy beside Emma, blocked Marcus’s arm, and drove one explosive punch across his face.
Marcus crashed backward into the antique map rack as wood snapped, rolled maps scattered, and leather cases spilled across the floor.
Bianca reached for Lucy again.
Vittorio knocked her hand away and sent her backward onto the leather ottoman with one open-handed strike.
Low tables overturned.
Trays and cushions scattered.
Then Vittorio picked up the dog bowl.
He placed it directly in front of Bianca.
“Enjoy your last meal.”
For the first time, Bianca looked afraid.
But as Vittorio held his crying daughter against his chest, there was one detail he could not ignore.
Lucy had entered breakfast already wearing torn, filthy clothes.

CHAPTER 1 - THE NAME SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN
Emma dropped her tray before she had time to think. Crystal trembled on the cart. One more second, and it would crash over the little boy sitting on the carpet beside the booth, pushing a red toy car in lazy circles.
She ran.
By the time the first wineglass fell, she had already thrown herself over him.
Glass burst against the floor behind her. Something sharp tore across her back. Pain flashed white and hot, but she kept both arms locked around the child, one hand over his dark hair, the other around his small shoulders.
And the name slipped out before she could stop it.
"Leo... look at me. You're safe."
The boy blinked at her, confused.
A man in a dark suit came fast from the far side of the room. He dropped to one knee, tattoos visible above his collar, and pulled the child into his arms with the reflex of someone who had already imagined losing too much.
"Don't move," he said to Emma when he saw the blood on her blouse.
The boy clutched his father tightly, but kept staring at her.
"She saved me, Dad."
The man's face changed. Fear softened into gratitude. Then something colder moved in.
He looked at Emma as if trying to place a half-remembered voice in the dark.
"How do you know his name?"
Emma froze.
Her back throbbed. Her hands trembled. She looked at the boy's face, at the small dimple in his left cheek, at the familiar gray-green eyes she had once searched for in every crowd.
Tears slipped down before she could wipe them away.
She pushed herself up on one elbow.
"Because..." Her voice broke. "I named him."
The father's hand tightened around the child.
Then he said her name like it had been buried for years.
"Emma?"
