He called it insulting.

Ethan looked up.

“You’re kidding.”

“Go straight, take the second right.”
Samuel frowned.
“You’re not walking me?”
“Absolutely not. I’ve learned my lesson.”
Samuel laughed.
Then held out his hand.
Ethan shook it.
“How’s school?”
“Almost done.”
“Facilities management?”
“Yeah.”
“Still a real degree?”
“Still.”
Mark appeared farther down the terminal.
He saw Samuel.
Approached.
This time there was no fear.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
“Mark.”
Samuel looked around.
“How are things?”
Mark answered:
“Different.”
Northfield had revised guidelines.
Frontline employees were allowed brief discretionary passenger assistance when safety and coverage were not compromised.
Supervisors were trained to distinguish operational abandonment from reasonable service judgment.
Turnover improved.
Passenger complaints dropped slightly.
Nothing magical.

Samuel looked at Ethan.
“Worth getting fired?”
Ethan laughed.
“No.”
“Good answer.”
