CHAPTER 1 - The Church Steps
"Please... I'm hungry."
The girl's voice was so weak it barely carried over the wind.
Mara Ellison stopped on the stone steps outside St. Jude's Church.
"Where are your parents?"
The girl swallowed hard. "My father died. Mom never came back."
Mara's breath caught.
The child's collar slipped open.
A silver half-moon pendant hung there on a chain. Broken cleanly down the middle.
Mara went still.
Her fingers trembled as she reached into her coat pocket and pulled out another half, old and polished by years of touch. She pressed the two pieces together.
They formed one full moon.
The world seemed to go silent.
"Who gave you this?" Mara asked.
"My dad," the girl said. "He said my grandma had the other half."
Mara sat down hard on the steps.
"No... this is impossible."
The church bells rang above them, and Mara felt suddenly cold in a way the winter could never explain.
Then she heard footsteps.
A man in a dark wool coat climbed the steps, holding two coffees. He was tall, calm, and familiar in a way that made Mara's chest ache.
He looked from Mara to the child.
"Mom?" he said slowly. "This little girl looks so familiar... Who is she?"
Mara's hand closed around the pendant so tightly it hurt.
"Don't ask me that here."

WHEN MY LITTLE SOPHIE BROKE DOWN IN MY ARMS AND WHISPERED THAT
When My Little Sophie Broke Down In My Arms And Whispered That Her Stepmom Hurts Her Every Day, I Knew I Could No Longer Keep The Secret I Held About Vanessa’S Past.
Sophie finally broke down in her daddy’s arms:
“Daddy… she hurts me every day!”
Her stepmother immediately called her a liar.
But Sophie’s father had already seen enough.
Then he looked Vanessa straight in the eyes and revealed that he knew something about her first husband…
Her face went completely pale.
What was Vanessa hiding? 😨
Vittorio Romano heard his three-year-old daughter crying before he understood what he was seeing.
“If she behaves like an animal,” Bianca said sarcastically, “she eats like one.”
Vittorio crossed the room immediately and lifted his daughter.
Lucy wrapped both arms around his neck.
“Daddy… But I’m a human being.”
Near the doorway, Emma stood trembling with a smartphone in her hands.
She showed Vittorio what she had recorded earlier.
On the screen, Bianca repeatedly forced Lucy’s face toward the bowl of dog food.
Then Marcus saw the phone.
He lunged for it.
Vittorio placed Lucy beside Emma, blocked Marcus’s arm, and drove one explosive punch across his face.
Marcus crashed backward into the antique map rack as wood snapped, rolled maps scattered, and leather cases spilled across the floor.
Bianca reached for Lucy again.
Vittorio knocked her hand away and sent her backward onto the leather ottoman with one open-handed strike.
Low tables overturned.
Trays and cushions scattered.
Then Vittorio picked up the dog bowl.
He placed it directly in front of Bianca.
“Enjoy your last meal.”
For the first time, Bianca looked afraid.
But as Vittorio held his crying daughter against his chest, there was one detail he could not ignore.
Lucy had entered breakfast already wearing torn, filthy clothes.
