CHAPTER 2 The Promise Her Mother Left Behind

The little girl's legs shook violently as she tried to balance herself. Tears streamed down her father's face while the barefoot boy carefully supported her without forcing a single movement.
"How?" her father whispered.
The boy lowered his eyes.
"Her mother asked me."
The words stunned everyone.
"My wife died three years ago," the father replied.
The boy quietly nodded before reaching into his pocket. He unfolded an old photograph whose edges had become soft from years of being carried everywhere.
The father froze.
The picture showed his late wife sitting on a hospital bench beside the same barefoot boy.
Turning it over, he recognized her handwriting immediately.
Find my daughter. Make her believe.
His hands began trembling.
The boy explained that years earlier he had been living on the streets near the hospital when the woman found him hungry and alone. She shared her food with him and spoke about her little girl who loved dancing through the kitchen in a pink dress.
"She said one day her daughter would forget how brave she really was."
The little girl covered her mouth, remembering those moments with her mother.
The boy smiled gently.
"She asked me that if I ever met you... I should ask one question."
May you like
He looked into her eyes once more.
"Do you want to try?"
