He Opened the Locked Clinic Door and Found the Son He Never Knew

CHAPTER 1 - THE DOOR AFTER HOURS
"Please! Help my son!"
Emily Carter's voice cracked across the dark clinic entrance as she slammed her palm against the glass.
Inside, a receptionist already wearing her coat shook her head. "The clinic is closed. Come back tomorrow."
The little boy in Emily's arms coughed so hard his whole body folded in on itself. His face had gone chalk-white. Sweat stuck his brown hair to his forehead. He tried to breathe, but each breath came thin and sharp, like it hurt on the way in.
Emily shoved her shoulder against the door before it could shut completely. "He may not make it till tomorrow!"
Then Noah went limp.
Her knees hit the concrete steps. She caught him before his head struck the ground and pulled him into her chest.
"Noah. Baby, stay with me. Stay with Mommy."
A moment later, the lock clicked from inside.
A man in blue scrubs pushed the door open and dropped to one knee beside them. He moved fast, with the kind of calm that comes from years of panic not being allowed to matter. He checked Noah's breathing, pressed two fingers to his neck, then looked up.
"Bring him inside."
He reached for the boy.
Then he saw Emily's face.
His hand froze in midair.
"Emily?"
The name hit her harder than the winter wind.
Dr. Daniel Hayes looked older than the man she had loved at twenty-four. Broader in the shoulders. More tired around the eyes. But they were the same eyes, clear blue and impossible to forget.
Emily pulled Noah closer by instinct.
Daniel stared, then forced himself back to the child. He put his stethoscope to Noah's chest. "How old is he?"
Emily swallowed. "Seven."
Daniel's hand stopped.
"Seven?" he repeated.
Noah opened his eyes, weak and glassy. Under the fluorescent light, they looked unmistakably blue.
Daniel lifted his gaze to Emily, his voice barely there.
"Emily... is he my...?"
May you like
Before she could answer, Noah's breathing turned into a frightening whistle, and Daniel shouted toward the hall, "Call 911. Now."
At that exact moment, the receptionist whispered from behind him, "Doctor Hayes... your wife is on line one."
