CHAPTER 3 - WHAT SILENCE COST

Emily sat in the family waiting room with a paper cup of untouched coffee growing cold in her hands.

Dead.

The word stayed with her because of the way Claire had said it. Not accusing. Not dramatic. Just exhausted, as if she had lived with that ghost too.

Daniel came in alone an hour later. He closed the door behind him.

"Noah is stable for now," he said. "They've started antibiotics. They're watching his oxygen closely."

Emily nodded. It was all she had strength for.

Daniel remained standing. "Claire told me what she knew. Which wasn't much. A friend of yours called me seven years ago and said you'd been in a crash on your way out of state. She said there was a fire. No survivors identified yet. Then your number was disconnected."

Emily lifted her face. "Tessa called you?"

"Yes."

Emily shut her eyes.

Tessa had been her older sister. Practical. Protective. Too protective.

"My father found out I was pregnant," Emily said quietly. "He told me you'd ruin your residency if people knew. He said your career would be over before it began, and I'd become the girl who trapped a doctor. I was scared. Tessa said she'd help me leave until things calmed down."

Daniel's mouth tightened. "So instead she buried me."

Emily looked at her hands. "I didn't know she called you with that lie. Not then. She took my phone. She said it was better if you hated me than if you threw your life away trying to find me."

Daniel gave one bitter laugh. "I didn't hate you. I grieved you."

That landed where anger couldn't.

Emily finally met his eyes. "I wanted to come back. A hundred times."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because Noah got sick when he was two. Asthma first. Then every winter became a fight. We moved from motel rooms to my aunt's trailer in Ohio. Tessa died three years ago. By the time I learned what she had done, I had no money, no proof, nothing but a child who needed me every hour."

Daniel sat across from her then, the first sign that his anger had made room for something else.

A nurse opened the door. "Mrs. Carter?"

Emily stood so fast her coffee spilled.

The nurse looked between them. "Your son is awake. He's asking for his father."

Daniel and Emily both turned at once.

May you like

Then the nurse added, "And there's a complication. The scan found a mass in his left lung."

"Your son is awake. He's asking for his father."
