Chapter 3

CHAPTER 4 - THE CHOICE NO ONE COULD MAKE FOR HER
The word mass sent Emily back into the oldest fear she knew: that there would be one sentence she could not survive hearing.
Daniel stood beside her when the pediatric pulmonologist explained the scan. The infection had revealed something else, a congenital blockage deep in Noah's left lung. It had likely caused years of recurrent illness. The pneumonia made surgery dangerous tonight, but waiting too long carried its own risk.
"He needs transfer to Children's Memorial by morning," the specialist said. "If he stabilizes overnight, surgery is possible within forty-eight hours."
Emily heard only pieces. Surgery. Risk. Consent.
Noah looked so small in the hospital bed, oxygen tucked under his nose, his fingers wrapped around the string bracelet Emily had tied there when his coughing first began. She had made it from blue thread at a church charity table years ago. Good luck, she'd called it.
Daniel noticed it now. "He still has that?"
She blinked. "I retie it every time it falls off."
His eyes moved to her face. "You used to tie one on my wrist before every exam."
It was such a small memory, but it broke something open between them.
Claire arrived while they were signing transfer papers. This time she brought no sharp coat, no hard expression. She carried a plastic bag with clean clothes, juice, and a phone charger.
"I thought you might need these," she said to Emily.
Emily stared. "Why are you helping me?"
Claire gave a tired smile. "Because whatever happened between you and Daniel happened before me. And because that little boy is sick."
Then, after a pause, she added, "We're separated. Have been for months. Not because of you. We were trying to be decent enough to say it out loud."
Daniel looked down, not denying it.
At midnight, Noah's oxygen dropped suddenly. Alarms sounded. Nurses rushed in. Daniel was pushed gently but firmly aside as the team worked.
Emily backed into the wall, shaking.
A resident turned to her. "We may need emergency consent if his lung collapses further."
Her signature was all they needed.
Her hand would not stop trembling.
Then Noah opened his eyes just long enough to whisper through the mask, "Mom... don't leave."
Emily took the pen.
