Chapter 1

CHAPTER 2 - THE NAME HE NEVER SPOKE
The ambulance took nine minutes.
Emily counted every one of them by Noah's breaths.
Daniel had laid the boy on an exam bed and started oxygen while the nurse from urgent care hurried in from the back. Noah's chest pulled inward with every inhale. The wheeze had become wet and deep. Daniel listened again, jaw tight.
"Severe pneumonia," he said. "Maybe more than that. Why didn't you bring him in sooner?"
Emily flinched, not from the question but from the shame in it.
"He had a fever yesterday. I thought it was a cold. I don't have a car. The bus took forever."
Daniel looked at her coat, too thin for the weather, and the frayed strap of her bag. He looked away quickly, as if pity might make this harder.
In the hallway, the phone kept ringing.
The receptionist leaned in. "Your wife keeps calling."
Daniel didn't turn around. "Tell Claire I'm with a patient."
Emily's eyes lifted. Wife.
Of course. Seven years was enough time for a whole second life.
When the paramedics arrived, Daniel went with them, though he did not need to. In the ambulance, he sat across from Emily while Noah lay between them under a heated blanket, an oxygen mask fogging with each shaky breath.
Daniel kept his focus on the monitor. "You disappeared."
Emily looked at Noah's hand in hers. "Yes."
"You left one note. No address. No call."
"I know."
His voice stayed low, but it was no softer. "And now you show up with a seven-year-old boy who has my eyes."
Emily's throat closed.
At the hospital, Noah was rushed for scans and bloodwork. A pediatric resident led Emily to a chair. Daniel stopped her before she sat down.
"I need the truth," he said.
She opened her mouth, but another woman reached them first. Well-dressed, controlled, beautiful in a sharp wool coat.
"Daniel," she said, then looked at Emily. "Who is she?"
Daniel didn't answer.
The woman studied Emily's face, then Noah's chart in Daniel's hand.
Her expression changed.
Slowly, she asked, "Is this the Emily?"
May you like
And before Emily could understand what that meant, Claire Hayes turned to her and said, "He thought you were dead."
"He thought you were dead."
