CHAPTER 2 The Man Behind the Phone Call

No one in the supermarket moved.
The only sounds were the soft hum of refrigerators and the rain tapping against the front windows.
Store Manager Richard Collins folded his arms and let out a sarcastic laugh.
"Who exactly are you calling?"
The elderly man calmly slipped the phone back into his jacket.
"You'll know soon enough."
Richard shook his head.
"I've heard every excuse imaginable."
He turned toward Emma.
"Clear out your locker before security arrives."
Emma simply nodded.
She wasn't angry.
She was disappointed.
Not because she had lost her job.
Because helping someone had become something worth punishing.
The elderly man watched the exchange quietly.
"My name is Robert Walker," he finally said.
"I'm sorry this happened because of me."
Emma smiled gently.
"It wasn't because of you."
"It was because I made a choice."
Before Robert could answer, several black SUVs slowly entered the rain-soaked parking lot.
Customers standing near the windows noticed them first.
"They're coming here..."
The automatic doors slid open.
Five men and two women in dark business suits walked into the supermarket.
Every one of them looked directly toward Robert.
Without hesitation, they stopped in front of him.
"Good evening, Mr. Walker."
Richard frowned.
"What is this?"
One of the suited men turned toward him.
"I'm David Chen, Chief Financial Officer of Walker Retail Holdings."
Richard's confident expression disappeared.
David continued.
"This morning our company finalized the purchase of the entire Maple Grocery chain."
A wave of whispers spread through the checkout area.
Customers slowly lowered their phones.
Someone quietly muttered,
"Walker Retail..."
"The billion-dollar company?"
Richard laughed nervously.
"There has to be some mistake."
"There isn't," David replied.
He handed Robert a folder.
"The acquisition became official twenty-three minutes ago."
Robert calmly signed the final page.
Then he looked around the supermarket.
"I always visit new stores before introducing myself."
"I don't inspect inventory."
"I inspect people."
Every employee stood frozen.
Robert's tired smile slowly faded as he turned toward Richard.
"I watched an elderly man be treated as an inconvenience."
He pointed toward Emma.
"And I watched one young cashier give away her last money without expecting anything in return."
Richard swallowed hard.
"Mr. Walker... I was only enforcing company policy."
Robert's eyes remained calm.
"A good policy should never punish compassion."
He looked toward Emma.
"Miss Brooks..."
Emma stepped forward uncertainly.
"Yes, sir?"
Robert smiled for the first time.
"I believe we have a great deal to discuss."
Every customer watched in complete silence.
Only moments earlier, Emma had been unemployed.
