CHAPTER 1 The Girl Who Ran Barefoot Into Court

The courtroom was silent as the trial of Mrs. Gable reached its final moments. Prosecutors claimed the longtime nanny had poisoned billionaire Arthur Sterling with digitalis, while his elegant widow, Clara, sat before the jury looking every bit the grieving wife. To everyone watching, the verdict already seemed certain.

Only one person refused to believe it.

Eight-year-old Clara Sterling had spent her entire childhood under Mrs. Gable's care. The nanny had protected her, comforted her, and loved her like a daughter. She knew there was no way Mrs. Gable could have murdered her father.

Ignoring the frightened adults around her, the little girl slipped from her seat and ran barefoot across the marble courtroom floor, still wearing the pajamas she had been taken from home in that morning.

"My nanny didn't kill my father!" she cried.

The courtroom erupted into chaos.

Holding up a bright pink toy phone, Clara explained that it wasn't really a toy. Hidden inside was a voice recorder she had secretly used on the night Arthur died. While hiding in the pantry, she had accidentally recorded a conversation between Clara's stepmother and Arthur's business partner, Julian.

The judge allowed the recording to play.

The room filled with Clara's calm voice.

"Once the digitalis works, the board will make you CEO."

Seconds later, Julian answered.

"We'll finally have everything Arthur stole from us."

The courtroom froze.
