CHAPTER 2 The Birthday Gift That Changed the Room

The evening continued, but Grace's humiliations did not.
While serving the main course, one of Benjamin's business guests accidentally knocked sauce onto her own designer dress.
Without hesitation, she pointed at Grace.
"Your employee ruined this."
Grace tried to explain.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, but—"
"Are you calling me a liar?"
Benjamin looked toward Grace.
"Please apologize."
Charlotte stared at her father in disbelief.
"Dad... she didn't do anything."
"Charlotte. Enough."
Grace quietly bowed her head.
"I'm sorry."
Someone whispered that she would never be able to afford the cleaning bill.
More laughter followed.
Then Mrs. Eleanor delivered the final blow.
"After dinner, Grace... we'll discuss whether we can continue trusting you."
Grace froze.
Charlotte stood so suddenly that her chair scraped loudly across the marble floor.
"No."
Every conversation stopped.
She walked directly to Grace, gently taking her injured hand.
Only then did everyone notice the blood still hidden beneath the napkin.
"You've all been looking at her all night," Charlotte said.
"But none of you actually saw her."
The little girl reached beneath her chair and lifted a small pink gift box.
"Everyone gave me expensive presents today."
She slowly opened it.
Inside was a handmade journal wrapped in blue fabric.
Across the first page were carefully written words:
For Charlotte... Never forget that kindness is worth more than wealth.
Charlotte turned page after page.
Grace had filled it with favorite recipes, bedtime stories, encouraging notes, and memories from the past five years.
"When Mom traveled for work, Grace stayed with me."
"When Dad worked late every night, Grace ate dinner with me."
May you like
"When Grandma slipped on the stairs, Grace helped her without telling anyone because she didn't want Grandma to feel embarrassed."
One by one, smiles disappeared around the ballroom.
