CHAPTER 1: THE HUNGRY GIRL WHO WALKED INTO A BALLROOM

Eight-year-old Lily had not eaten since the day before.

Her mother, Anna, was sick and lying in a tiny rented room above a laundry shop. There was no food left. No money. No one to help. When Lily heard music coming from the grand mansion on the hill, she followed the sound hoping someone might spare a piece of bread.

Barefoot and soaked from the rain, she stepped into a lavish charity banquet filled with crystal chandeliers, overflowing tables, and wealthy guests enjoying a feast. The contrast was impossible to ignore. While untouched food covered every table, Lily's stomach ached from hunger.

Gathering her courage, she spoke softly.

"I'm hungry."

The room fell silent.

Instead of kindness, she was met with suspicion. A uniformed security officer grabbed her shoulder and ordered her to leave immediately. Guests watched without intervening.

Then an elderly man seated at the head table suddenly stood.

His name was Reginald Hawthorne.

Founder of the Hawthorne empire.

As he looked at Lily, something felt familiar. Then he noticed the diamond heart necklace hanging around her neck.

His face changed instantly.

When Lily explained that her mother had given it to her, Reginald's heart nearly stopped.

Because he recognized the necklace.

He had once given it to his daughter Anna.

The daughter he had been told was dead fourteen years earlier.

And when Lily quietly said, "My mother's name is Anna," the world Reginald believed in began to collapse.
