CHAPTER 1 The Night Everything Changed

Marissa Vale believed that if she stayed patient enough, quiet enough, and forgiving enough, her family would eventually find peace again. For years she convinced herself that her husband, Daryl Price, was only stressed, only tired, only struggling through a difficult season. But one evening inside their small home outside Columbus, Ohio, she realized that love should never make a child afraid.

The argument started over something meaningless. Bills, dinner, laundry—small frustrations that quickly became another excuse for Daryl's anger. Marissa kept her voice soft, hoping their five-year-old son Mason wouldn't hear.

"Please," she whispered. "Not tonight. Mason can hear us."

It didn't matter.

The tension grew until Mason slowly appeared in the hallway wearing dinosaur pajamas, his eyes wide with fear.

"Mommy?"

That single word hurt Marissa more than anything else.

Knowing she needed help, she looked at her son and fought to keep her voice steady.

"Mason... sweetheart... go get my phone from the kitchen."

Daryl immediately tried to stop him.

"No. He doesn't need to do anything."

But Mason had already understood enough.

His little legs carried him to the kitchen as his shaking hands grabbed the phone from its charger. Every step felt impossibly brave for a child so young.

Holding the phone tightly against his chest, Mason refused to let go.

For the first time that night, someone inside the house chose courage instead of fear.
