CHAPTER 3 The Wish That Finally Came Home

Vanessa slowly removed the engagement ring from her finger. Tears filled her eyes, but her voice remained calm.

"I've been competing with a memory this entire time."

Ethan couldn't deny it.

Every birthday he disappeared to visit the children's hospital. Every donation he made, every building he funded, had been inspired by the little girl he thought he had lost forever.

Looking at Lily, Vanessa finally understood.

"I owe you an apology."

Lily gently shook her head.

"You didn't know."

"No," Vanessa replied. "But I judged you anyway."

She placed the ring on a nearby table before quietly walking out of the ballroom, leaving behind a celebration that no longer belonged to her.

Life didn't change overnight.

The newspapers eventually stopped talking about the broken engagement. Ethan returned to work while Lily continued delivering cakes and packages. But every morning they somehow found themselves meeting at the same neighborhood café. Sometimes they talked for hours. Sometimes they simply sat together in comfortable silence, folding paper cranes like they had done as children.

Months later, they stood outside the children's hospital Ethan had built. Children's laughter echoed across the playground as Lily held another paper crane between her fingers.

"I spent years wondering if that angry little boy ever grew up."

Ethan smiled.

"And I spent years wishing that brave little girl got another chance."

She laughed softly.

"I guess we both did."

He quietly held out his hand.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as a hero.

Just as the lonely nine-year-old boy who had once promised never to forget her.

Lily looked at the old paper crane resting between them before placing her hand in his.

May you like

The scar on his finger brushed gently against hers.

The wish they had folded together twenty years earlier had finally found its way home.
