CHAPTER 2 The Fight That Lasted Only Seconds
Vanessa laughed loudly so every inmate could hear.
"Either you take those shoes off yourself... or I'll take them off with your feet."
Without waiting for an answer, she bent down and grabbed Kate's sneaker.
It was the biggest mistake she had ever made.
In one smooth movement, Kate pulled her foot away, caught Vanessa's wrist, stepped to the side, and used her attacker's own momentum against her.
A second later, the prison's most feared inmate crashed face-first onto the concrete.
Before anyone could react, Kate had completely restrained her.
The entire confrontation lasted only seconds.
The women standing around the yard stared in disbelief.
Vanessa struggled with all her strength, but every attempt to escape only tightened Kate's control.
No shouting.
No panic.
Only complete precision.
Moments later, correctional officers rushed into the yard.
Instead of looking surprised, the shift supervisor simply sighed.
"I warned everyone this morning," he told the guards. "Nobody was supposed to provoke the new inmate."
