CHAPTER 1 The Ring That Paid for Breakfast

The breakfast rush had nearly reached its peak when eighteen-year-old Ethan Carter hurried between crowded tables inside Miller's Family Diner. Coffee cups clinked against saucers, pancakes disappeared from steaming plates, and conversations blended into the familiar soundtrack of another busy morning.
Near the front window, a large biker sat alone.
His weathered leather jacket looked older than some of the customers, and his gray beard framed a face that seemed permanently carved by years of hardship. A faded pair of riding gloves rested beside an empty coffee mug while an old silver ring, engraved with an unusual emblem, remained on his finger.
When Ethan delivered the check, the man reached calmly for his wallet.
His expression changed immediately.
He searched every pocket.
His jacket.
His jeans.
Even beneath the table.
Nothing.
"I'm... sorry," the man said quietly.
Ethan noticed the embarrassment before anyone else did.
Without another word, the biker slowly removed the silver ring from his finger and placed it gently on the counter.
"It's all I have left."
The cashier looked uncertain.
Before anyone could respond, Ethan quietly pulled out his own wallet and laid enough cash beside the receipt.
"Breakfast is on me."
The biker stared at the young waiter in disbelief.
Nearby customers stopped eating.
Manager Leonard Price hurried over, clearly irritated.
"You can't pay for customers."
Ethan met his eyes without raising his voice.
"He shouldn't have to trade his last memory for breakfast."
The manager shook his head in frustration.
"You'll regret this."
Ethan simply smiled.
"I don't think I will."
The biker picked up his ring, slipped it back onto his finger, and looked at Ethan for a long moment.
"Thank you, son."
He nodded once before quietly walking toward the front door.
Standing on the sidewalk outside, he pulled a phone from his jacket.
He dialed one number.
When someone answered, he spoke only a few words.
"Yeah..."

A long pause followed.
"I found him."
