Chapter 1: The Truth Buried in Winter

No one in the restaurant moved.
Eleanor Whitmore stared at the little girl as if she were looking at a ghost.
“What is your name?” she finally asked.
The child hesitated.
“Lily.”
The name struck Eleanor harder than any accusation.
Twenty-nine years ago, she had chosen that very name for the daughter she never got to hold.
A wave of dizziness swept through her.
“That’s impossible,” she whispered.
Lily reached into her coat again and pulled out a folded piece of paper. The edges were yellow with age.
“My mother told me to give you this if I ever found you.”
Eleanor unfolded the letter with trembling hands.
The handwriting was instantly recognizable.
Margaret.
The woman who had once been her closest friend.
The woman she had trusted with her newborn daughter.
As Eleanor read, tears filled her eyes.
Eleanor, if this letter reaches you, then I have failed to keep my promise. You believed your daughter died that winter night. She didn't. I lied. I took her because I thought I was saving her. The men hunting your family wanted leverage. They wanted your child. I disappeared with her before they could find her.
The room spun around Eleanor.
She remembered that night.
The threats.
The danger.
The fire that destroyed evidence.
And the phone call that shattered her life.
"Your daughter didn't survive."
She had believed it.
For nearly thirty years.
But the letter continued.
I raised her as my own. When she passed away, I told Lily everything. She deserves the truth. She deserves her family.
Eleanor lowered the letter slowly.
“You were never sold,” she whispered.
Lily frowned.
“My mother lied?”
“No.”
Eleanor wiped away a tear.
“She told you the truth as she understood it.”
For the first time, Lily looked uncertain.
“Then who am I?”
Eleanor reached toward her.
“My granddaughter.”
The entire restaurant gasped.
Because the child standing before them was not Eleanor's daughter.
She was her daughter's daughter.

Eleanor's child was still alive.
