CHAPTER 1 The Waiter Who Refused to Look Away

The diner was packed with lunchtime customers, the air filled with clinking coffee cups, quiet conversations, and people focused on their own meals. Ethan Carter hurried between tables, exhausted after another busy shift. Like every other day, he expected to finish work unnoticed.

Everything changed when a large biker suddenly collapsed outside the restaurant.

Most customers glanced toward the window before looking away. Some lifted their phones to record. Others assumed the man was drunk because of his leather vest and rough appearance.

Manager Leonard Price barely looked outside before shaking his head.

"Great. Exactly what we need in front of the restaurant."

Ethan watched the stranger struggle to breathe.

"Sir... he's hurt."

Leonard answered without hesitation.

"Stay inside. He's probably drunk."

But Ethan had seen enough to know something was seriously wrong. Years earlier he had lost someone because strangers chose not to help, and he refused to watch it happen again.

Ignoring his manager's orders, Ethan rushed outside and knelt beside the fallen biker.

"Sir, can you hear me?"

The man slowly opened his eyes.

"Water..."

Ethan shouted toward the diner for help.

No one moved.

Without wasting another second, he ran back inside, filled a glass himself, and carefully helped the biker drink. Up close, the frightening stranger no longer looked dangerous.

He looked exhausted.

Frightened.

Human.

When Leonard stormed outside and threatened to fire him for embarrassing the restaurant, Ethan calmly answered,

May you like

"He's a person."

The words silenced everyone standing on the sidewalk.
