CHAPTER 3 - THE CHILD BETWEEN THEM

Daniel ended the call without replying.

That frightened Emma more than if he had shouted.

Leo stood in the middle of the office, one hand wrapped around his toy car, small shoulders drawn tight. Children always know when adults are lying, even when they do not understand the lie.

Emma knelt carefully despite the pain in her back.

"Hey," she said softly. "That was very brave, what you did. You stayed still."

Leo studied her. "You knew my name before Daddy said it."

Daniel closed his eyes for one second.

There was no clean way through this.

Emma looked up at him. "He deserves the truth. Not every detail. But not another lie."

Daniel pulled a hand through his hair. The tattoos at his neck moved with the tension in his throat. He had the look of a man deciding whether to reopen a grave.

Then he crouched beside his son.

"Leo, do you remember how I told you that the hospital made mistakes when you were born, and some things got... confused?"

Leo nodded slowly.

Daniel swallowed. "This is Emma. And we think she may be your mother."

The child frowned, not shocked so much as careful. "May be?"

Emma almost smiled through her tears. Smart boy.

"Yes," she said. "Because grown-ups should prove important things."

Leo absorbed that. Then he did the most merciful thing possible.

He held out the toy car to her.

"You can hold this if you're scared."

Emma took it with shaking fingers.

"I have been scared for six years," she whispered.

Daniel's eyes met hers. For the first time, anger was not the strongest thing there. Grief was.

They left through the kitchen to avoid the dining room crowd. Daniel drove them to urgent care for Emma's stitches, then to a twenty-four-hour pharmacy. No one said much. Leo fell asleep in the back seat, his head tipped against the window.

In the parking lot, Daniel finally spoke.

"If my mother forged those papers, I can prove it. She kept everything. She never throws anything away."

Emma stared at the sleeping boy.

"And if the test says he's mine?"

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

"Then tomorrow," he said, "you come with me to my mother's house."

May you like

When they reached his car again, Leo was awake.

He looked at Emma and asked, "If you're my mother, why do I already feel like I know you?"
