CHAPTER 4 - HIS MOTHER'S HOUSE
Daniel's mother lived in the same blue house on Linden Street, with trimmed hedges and polished brass and curtains that looked permanently closed against the world.
Emma had stood on that porch once before, young and pregnant, asking where Daniel was.
Marisol Reyes had told her, very calmly, that some doors did not open twice.
Now Daniel opened this one without knocking.
Marisol rose from the dining room table, immaculate in cream silk, as if she had been waiting all morning. Her eyes moved from Daniel to Leo to Emma's bandaged shoulder.
She did not look surprised.
"Not in front of the child," she said.
"No," Daniel replied. "Especially in front of the child."
Leo stayed close to Emma this time. That alone told Marisol the ground had shifted.
Daniel laid a file on the table. "Hospital records. Signature comparison request. And the original birth certificate you gave me six years ago."
Marisol's chin lifted. "I protected my grandson."
Emma's fingers curled around the little red toy car in her pocket. She had brought it without thinking. Now it felt like an anchor.
"From what?" she asked.
Marisol finally looked at her. "From uncertainty. From poverty. From a mother who could barely stand after childbirth."
Emma took the blow but did not step back.
Daniel did.
"She was alone because you told me she abandoned us."
Marisol's face cracked then, not with cruelty but with conviction worn too long. "You were twenty-four. Angry. Running with men who carried knives and debts. You had that stupid tattoo on your neck and thought love could outfight danger. I saw one future where that child lived safely, and I chose it."
Leo frowned. "Grandma, did you steal me?"
The room went still.
Marisol shut her eyes.
When she opened them, they were wet.
"Yes," she said. "In every way that matters."
"You did not protect him," Emma said. "You erased me."
Marisol went to the sideboard and removed a long, yellowed envelope.
Inside were letters. Dozens.
Emma recognized her own handwriting on some. Daniel's on others.
None had ever been mailed.
At the bottom was one more document.
