CHAPTER 1 The Cry Behind the Hidden Door


The Montoya estate glittered beneath crystal chandeliers as guests laughed over expensive wine and elegant dinners. Everything about the evening reflected wealth, perfection, and carefully maintained appearances. Marco Reyes stood near the French doors with a glass of untouched wine, watching his wife Daniela enjoy another family gathering with her parents.

Although he had been married into the family for three years, Marco had never truly felt accepted. Daniela's father, Rodrigo Montoya, constantly reminded him that he came from a small town, while her mother, Elena, never missed an opportunity to question his career. Marco tolerated the quiet insults because he loved his wife.

Needing a moment away from the crowd, he wandered into the east wing of the enormous mansion.

As he washed his hands in the guest bathroom, he heard something that didn't belong.

A child crying.

It was faint, almost hidden beneath the music and conversation, but unmistakably real. Following the sound, Marco discovered a narrow door almost perfectly disguised within the hallway wall.

He gently knocked.

"Is someone in there?"

The crying stopped.

Then a tiny voice answered.

"No."

Marco slowly opened the unlocked door.

Inside was a tiny windowless room containing nothing except a dirty blanket, an empty plastic cup, and a frightened little girl no older than five years old. Curled against the wall with bruises on her arm and fear in her eyes, she looked less like a child living in the mansion and more like someone hidden inside it.

Marco knelt beside her, speaking softly until she finally placed her trembling hand in his.

That was when he noticed the silver bracelet around her wrist.

A bracelet he had seen before.
