CHAPTER 1 The Girl They Said Didn't Belong

Olivia Carter arrived at the National Long-Range Shooting Championship looking nothing like the other competitors. While everyone else wore expensive shooting jackets and carried custom-built rifles, she stepped onto the firing line wearing a faded brown hoodie, worn jeans, and dusty work boots. Slung over her shoulder was an old wooden rifle that looked as though it had survived decades of use.

Range Officer Trent Maddox immediately singled her out. Mocking her appearance and equipment, he loudly declared that people like her had no place at a national event. Before Olivia could react, he snatched her rifle and smashed it against a steel barricade, splitting the stock into two pieces. Laughter spread through the crowd as Trent tossed the broken rifle at her feet and ordered her to leave.

Instead of arguing, Olivia calmly picked up every piece. She opened her backpack, pulled out black tape, cord, and a multitool, then carefully repaired the damaged stock. While competitors laughed at what they called "arts and crafts," Chief Instructor Raymond Shaw silently watched from above. Something about the rifle, the repairs, and Olivia's calm confidence reminded him of a memory he had buried for years.

When the championship reached its final round, every shooter struggled with the tiny steel target three hundred meters away. Finally, only Olivia remained. She steadied her breathing, ignored every mocking voice around her, and squeezed the trigger.
