CHAPTER 2 The Name They Tried to Erase
Silence covered the firing range after Olivia's impossible shot. Instead of celebrating, she reached inside her hoodie and removed a weathered shooting badge marked with a broken-wing hawk. Holding it toward Raymond Shaw, she quietly asked,
"Do you remember his name?"
The question drained every bit of color from Shaw's face. He recognized the badge immediately. It had belonged to Marcus Carter, the greatest marksman he had ever known—a man whose name had disappeared from the sport more than twenty years earlier.
Olivia revealed that Marcus Carter was her father. Older spectators began whispering his name, while younger competitors looked on in confusion. Sensing that something far bigger than a championship had just unfolded, Competition Director Martin Hayes ordered the organization's old archives to be retrieved.
The forgotten files revealed an ugly truth. Marcus had never been proven guilty of cheating. There had been no evidence, no witnesses, and no proper investigation. Under growing pressure, Shaw admitted that he had signed the ruling which ended Marcus's career because powerful officials wanted him gone. They believed a poor mechanic from Colorado wasn't the right face for the sport, and Shaw had accepted a promotion instead of defending the truth.
