Chapter 3: The Relic from the Past

I slowly turned toward the woman in the wedding dress.
She stumbled backward, tears streaming down her face, her shoulders trembling uncontrollably.
"You have to believe me," she sobbed. "I was only trying to protect our reputation..."
"You locked a terrified little boy in a room just to protect your image?!" I hissed, every word cutting like a blade.
I stepped toward her, ready to rip the key from her hand.
Then I stopped.
My eyes fell on the bracelet wrapped around the little boy's wrist as he clung to the housekeeper.
It was an old braided cord bracelet.
Hanging from it...
Was a tiny silver cross.
My heart stopped.
The air vanished from the room.
I knew that silver cross.
Emily had once told me, through tears, that she had lost it during a violent storm years ago.
