CHAPTER 1 The Slap That Broke Ten Years of Trust

The slap echoed through the Harper mansion, silencing every conversation in the room.
Grace Collins staggered backward, one hand instinctively reaching for the little girl hiding behind her apron. Lily clung tightly to Grace's waist, trembling so hard she could barely breathe.
On the marble coffee table sat an open velvet jewelry box.
Empty.
Evelyn Harper pointed at Grace with shaking hands.
"You stole from this family."
The accusation hurt far more than the burning mark across Grace's cheek.
For ten years she had cleaned the mansion before sunrise, cared for Lily through fevers and birthdays, packed lunches, comforted nightmares, and treated the Harper family as if they were her own.
"I would never steal from you," Grace said quietly.
Evelyn's expression remained cold.
"Then where is my jewelry?"
Grace had no answer because she had never entered Evelyn's room except to deliver freshly ironed clothes.
Daniel Harper stood nearby, saying almost nothing.
Grace noticed he refused to look her in the eyes.
Instead, he kept rubbing his left wrist beneath the sleeve of his sweater as though trying to hide something.
Watching silently from the corner, the elderly butler Arthur Brooks noticed it too.
For forty years he had learned to read people without words.
Daniel's expensive watch was missing.
Arthur remembered polishing it only days earlier.
Now only a pale mark circled his wrist.
Something wasn't right.
Meanwhile, little Lily cried softly.
"Miss Grace didn't do it."
"Lily," Evelyn interrupted gently, "the adults are talking."
"But she didn't."
Grace stroked the little girl's hair.
"It's okay."
May you like
But it wasn't.
After ten years of loyalty, Grace was being thrown out of the only home Lily had ever known.
