CHAPTER 2 The Recording No One Expected
Evelyn ordered Grace to leave immediately.
Grace slowly turned toward the front door, but every step became harder because Lily refused to let go of her apron.
Arthur quietly watched the room.
Then his eyes settled on something almost everyone else had forgotten.
The baby monitor.
Earlier that afternoon, Lily had been playing with her dolls while the nursery camera remained switched on.
Arthur suddenly remembered something important.
The camera's wide-angle lens didn't only record the nursery.
It also captured part of the upstairs hallway.
Including the hallway outside Evelyn's bedroom.
Without saying a word, Arthur removed a small remote from his jacket pocket.
A quiet electronic beep filled the room.
Everyone turned.
The baby monitor screen came to life.
"What are you doing?" Evelyn asked.
Arthur calmly replied,
"Showing everyone the truth."
Security footage from earlier that afternoon began playing.
The hallway appeared.
Seconds later, Daniel quietly entered Evelyn's bedroom after carefully checking both directions.
Several moments passed before he walked back out.
Something small disappeared into his jacket pocket.
The recording skipped forward.
Daniel appeared again.
This time, his expensive wristwatch had disappeared.
In his hands was the same empty jewelry box now sitting on the coffee table downstairs.
