CHAPTER 1 The Veteran Everyone Ignored
The old man had been sitting alone at the bus stop for nearly twenty minutes, quietly watching rain fall across the empty street. A cold wind swept through the city as people hurried past without giving him more than a passing glance. He wore a faded jacket, an old cap embroidered with the word "Veteran," and worn shorts that revealed the prosthetic leg replacing the one he had lost years earlier.
He had grown used to the stares.
Some people looked away in discomfort. Others stared with pity. Most simply pretended he wasn't there.
But losing his leg had never been the hardest part of his life.
War had taken his closest friends, his health, and the future he once imagined. After returning home, his marriage slowly fell apart, they never had children, and one by one his fellow veterans disappeared from his life. Now, loneliness had become his most familiar companion.
His quiet afternoon changed when three young men stopped near the bus shelter.
The moment they noticed his prosthetic leg, they began laughing.
"Hey, old man," one called out. "Does that thing need charging every night?"
Another grinned.
"I bet airport security loves him."
Their jokes became louder with every passing second. Passersby looked over before quickly walking away, unwilling to get involved.
The veteran remained silent.
