CHAPTER 2 The Woman Behind the Broom

Richard refused to believe what everyone had just witnessed. He insisted it had been luck, accused the equipment of being adjusted, and searched desperately for an excuse to protect his pride.

Emma calmly removed her work gloves and placed them beside the pistol. Small scars covered her hands, the kind earned through years of training rather than cleaning floors.

"You aren't just a janitor," Richard said.

Emma looked at him quietly.

"I mop floors here."

The difference between the two answers unsettled everyone.

Richard threatened to have her fired, but Emma didn't move. Instead, she reached into her pocket and placed a matte black access card on the table. A silver emblem matched the one displayed above the club entrance.

Several older members immediately recognized it.

It was a majority shareholder's access card.

Before Richard could react, Olivia Grant, the club's legal director, walked onto the range with two security officers and a tablet in her hands.

"Ms. Carter," she said respectfully. "The board meeting is ready."

The crowd froze.

Richard looked from Olivia to Emma, unable to understand what he was hearing.

Olivia opened the document on her tablet.

"The ownership transfer became official at eight o'clock this morning."

Emma quietly explained that she had spent months working under a maintenance uniform because she wanted to see how employees were treated when nobody believed an important person was watching.

Richard accused her of setting him up.

Emma simply shook her head.

"No."

"You exposed yourself."

For the first time that morning, Richard Hayes had nothing to say.
