CHAPTER 1: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO ONLY WANTED SHOES

My name is Michael Harrison, and my life changed forever on what seemed like an ordinary Thursday afternoon in Chicago.

On paper, I had everything.

A company worth hundreds of millions.

Luxury properties.

Financial freedom.

But every night I returned to an empty apartment.

No family.

No children.

No purpose.

That afternoon, I decided to walk home instead of calling my driver.

Halfway down a crowded sidewalk, a small voice stopped me.

“Mister?”

I turned and saw a little girl no older than five.

Her name was Sophie.

Her backpack was worn.

Her shoes were falling apart.

She looked at me seriously and said something I still remember.

“Everyone laughs at me. I just need new shoes for school.”

There was no manipulation.

No performance.

Only honesty.

So I took her to a nearby shoe store.

The moment she put on a simple pair of white sneakers, her entire face changed.

She smiled.

Walked carefully.

Then laughed.

“It doesn’t hurt anymore.”

Before leaving, she looked at me with complete seriousness.

“When I grow up, I’ll pay you back.”

I laughed.

She didn’t.

“My mom says promises matter.”

Minutes later, after she disappeared into the crowd, my phone buzzed.

An unknown number had sent me a photograph.

Sophie standing beside a hospital bed.

Holding the hand of a woman connected to medical equipment.

Then another message arrived.

Her mother is dying.

May you like

And suddenly I knew my encounter with Sophie wasn’t over.

It was only beginning.
