CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET MY SISTER LEFT BEHIND

The message led me to St. Mary's Hospital.

Room 412.

When I arrived, Sophie immediately recognized me.

“The shoe man!”

For the first time in years, hearing those words made me smile.

Her mother introduced herself as Emma.

She looked exhausted.

Fragile.

Yet there was a strange peace in her eyes.

After Sophie left the room for a snack, Emma revealed why she had contacted me.

Ten years earlier, my younger sister Sarah had died in a tragic accident.

The loss devastated my family.

What I never knew was that before she died, Sarah had been volunteering at a shelter.

Emma had been living there.

Homeless.

Pregnant.

Alone.

According to Emma, my sister saved her life.

Found her housing.

Paid for medical care.

Bought supplies for her baby.

And continued visiting after Sophie was born.

Then Emma handed me a photograph.

My sister holding newborn Sophie.

On the back were four words written in Sarah's handwriting:

Everyone deserves a chance.

For the first time in years, I cried.

Over the following weeks, I visited constantly.

At first for Emma.

Then for Sophie.

We played games.

Read stories.

Talked about school.

Slowly, without realizing it, they became part of my life.

Then one evening Emma asked a question that changed everything.

“If something happens to me... would you watch over Sophie?”

I looked at the little girl sleeping nearby.

May you like

And answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”
