CHAPTER 3: THE BEST INVESTMENT OF MY LIFE

Three days later, Emma passed away peacefully.
The funeral was small.
A few friends.
Several nurses.
Sophie.
And me.
Afterward came months of legal paperwork.
Court hearings.
Background checks.
Approvals.
But eventually, it was finished.
Sophie came home with me.
For the first time in my life, my apartment no longer felt empty.
There were crayons on the kitchen table.
Children's books on the couch.
Tiny shoes near the front door.
Laughter where silence used to live.
Life where loneliness used to sit.
A year later, Sophie stood in the kitchen preparing for school.
She wore a new backpack.
A brand-new pair of shoes.
Then she looked up at me.
“Remember when I promised to pay you back?”
I laughed.
“You were five years old.”
“I still remember.”
She wrapped her arms around me.
Then pointed at my chest.
“You bought me shoes.”
A pause.
“And I gave you a family.”
For a moment, I couldn't speak.
Because she was right.
The greatest investment I ever made wasn't in business.
It wasn't in real estate.
It wasn't in stocks.
It was forty-five dollars spent on a little girl who needed shoes.

And in return...
she gave meaning to a life that had everything except what mattered most.
