CHAPTER 1 The Woman Everyone Laughed At 2026

The Texas National Shooting Championship opened before a packed arena filled with competitors, sponsors, television cameras, and thousands of spectators expecting another easy victory for defending champion Mason Reed. Dressed in a spotless sponsor uniform and surrounded by assistants, Mason looked every bit the celebrity everyone had come to watch.
Then another competitor quietly approached the registration table.
Evelyn Hale carried an old, scratched rifle case that looked older than many of the shooters inside the arena. Wearing a faded green jacket and plain tactical pants, she looked completely out of place among the expensive equipment and polished uniforms.
The laughter began almost immediately.
Mason mocked her appearance, asking if walk-in competitors were now allowed at the national championship. Others joked that she looked like someone's aunt who had wandered into the wrong building. Even the cameras turned toward her, expecting an embarrassing moment.
Evelyn never argued.
She calmly handed over her registration, accepted her lane assignment, and ignored every insult thrown her way.
When Mason blocked her path and warned her not to embarrass herself, she simply looked into his eyes.
"I'll try."
Minutes later, the competition began.
While Mason impressed the crowd with his speed and confidence, Evelyn quietly matched every shot. The first scoreboard stunned the arena.
MASON REED — 100
EVELYN HALE — 100
People called it beginner's luck.
The second round changed everything.
Evelyn moved with calm precision, never wasting a motion, while Mason rushed one difficult target. When the scores appeared again, the arena fell strangely quiet.
MASON REED — 198
