CHAPTER 2 The Shooter No One Could Explain

As the competition continued, the cameras stopped following Mason and began focusing on Evelyn instead. Every round she remained calm, disciplined, and almost emotionless, shooting with a level of consistency that left experienced competitors confused.
Mason tried to learn who she was.
"Military?"
"No."
"College champion?"
"No."
"So where did you come from?"
Evelyn only smiled slightly.
"Something like that."
The more mysterious she seemed, the more frustrated Mason became.
Before the semifinal, officials requested another inspection of her rifle after complaints were filed. Daniel Ward, the senior referee, personally examined the old firearm. Every measurement, modification, and safety check passed without issue.
Yet something about the rifle bothered him.
A small repair mark on the wooden stock.
The way Evelyn handled the weapon.
The precise movements of her hands.
Everything felt strangely familiar, though he couldn't explain why.
Back on the firing line, Mason regained momentum and nearly caught up. The crowd chanted his name as he climbed the scoreboard, but Evelyn refused to be distracted.
The semifinal ended with only a single point separating them.
MASON REED — 494
EVELYN HALE — 495
The audience erupted.

This was no longer the story of a famous champion defending his title.
