CHAPTER 3 The Name That Returned After Twenty-Five Years

The championship came down to one final challenge.

Eighteen moving targets.

Seven seconds.

The national record stood at sixteen.

Mason Reed stepped forward first and delivered a brilliant performance, tying the existing record with sixteen perfect hits. The arena exploded with applause as everyone believed the championship had already been decided.

Then Evelyn stepped into her lane.

She ignored the noise, the cameras, and the pressure surrounding her. The buzzer sounded, and her rifle came alive. Every movement was smooth, controlled, and effortless. One by one, every target fell until the impossible happened.

The scoreboard flashed.

EVELYN HALE — 18/18

The arena fell silent before erupting into cheers.

Officials reviewed every shot.

Every hit was confirmed.

Evelyn Hale had broken the national record.

As Daniel Ward handed her the official result sheet, he noticed a second surname quietly written beneath her signature. His face instantly turned pale.

"I haven't seen that name in twenty-five years," he whispered.

He looked at Evelyn with trembling hands.

"There was only one shooter who carried it."

"The greatest marksman I ever knew."

Mason stood speechless while the cameras moved closer.

Daniel finally asked the question everyone wanted answered.

"Who are you?"

Evelyn closed her old rifle case before meeting his eyes.

"I'm the last one carrying that name."

In that moment, the crowd realized they had spent the entire day mocking the daughter of a forgotten legend. As Evelyn walked toward the exit beneath a standing ovation, even Mason stepped aside without saying a word.
