Chapter 12: The Box Under the Tree

For the first time that night, nobody looked at Victoria.

Everyone looked at the broken Christmas tree.

The same tree she had destroyed.

The same tree she had laughed at.

The same tree she believed was nothing more than old decorations and painful memories.

My grandmother slowly walked toward it.

“Help me move this.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

Together, they lifted the fallen branches.

Broken glass crunched beneath their shoes.

Every sound felt like a countdown.

I watched the tree that my mother had loved being taken apart.

But this time, it wasn’t being destroyed.

It was revealing something.

Jonathan searched through the base.

“There should be a compartment.””

Michael nodded.

“She used to joke about hiding things in places nobody would respect.””

My eyes filled.

“That sounds like Mom.””

Pearl smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

She touched one of the branches.

“She knew beauty made people careless.””

After several minutes, Jonathan stopped.

“I found something.””

Everyone gathered around.

Inside the wooden base of the tree was a small metal box.

Covered in scratches.

But untouched.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.””

My father looked at her.

“No?””

She quickly shook her head.

“I mean… this is insane.””

Jonathan opened the box.

Inside were several items.

A flash drive.

A small notebook.

And a photograph.

My father picked up the photograph first.

His face changed immediately.

“What?””

I looked at it.

It showed my mother.

Standing beside a woman I had never seen before.

On the back was a date.

And a name.

*Dr. Sarah Collins.*

Jonathan took the notebook.

“This is Claire’s handwriting.””

My father looked at him.

“Read it.””

Jonathan opened the first page.

“‘If you are reading this, then I was right. Victoria did not enter our lives by accident.’”

Victoria’s breathing became uneven.

Jonathan continued.

“‘But the person who worries me most is not Victoria.’”

Everyone became still.

He turned the page.

“‘It is the person helping her.’”

My father looked at Michael.

My uncle looked away.

But Jonathan kept reading.

“‘Michael is scared. Victoria is desperate. But someone else is controlling them both.’”

A cold feeling moved through me.

Someone else?

Who could possibly be above all of this?

Jonathan reached for the flash drive.

“There is a video.””

He connected it to his laptop.

The screen flickered.

Then my mother appeared.

I forgot how much I missed her.

Even seeing her face on a screen hurt.

She looked tired.

But strong.

“Emma,” she said.

My knees weakened.

The video continued.

“If you are watching this, then I’m sorry.””

She paused.

“I wanted to tell you everything myself.””

My father turned away.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“I need you to understand one thing. The people who hurt me were not the only ones responsible.””

A shadow crossed her face.

“There is someone inside our family who has been manipulating everyone.””

My father leaned closer.

“Who?””

My mother continued.

“I found proof.””

She held up a document.

“And the person behind everything is someone you would never suspect.””

The video suddenly glitched.

Everyone froze.

Then the screen went black.

“No,” Jonathan whispered.

My father looked at him.

“What happened?””

Jonathan checked the device.

“The file was damaged.””

Victoria exhaled.

Almost relieved.

But then my grandmother noticed something.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

Pearl pointed at the laptop.

“There’s another file.””

A second video.

Hidden.

Jonathan opened it.

The screen came back.

But this time, my mother wasn’t alone.

Someone was sitting across from her.

Someone whose face was only partially visible.

Someone speaking.

And the first words we heard were:

“Claire, if you expose me, Emma will never be safe.””

My father stepped closer.

The color disappeared from his face.

Because he recognized the voice.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He whispered the name.

A name that made everyone in the room freeze.

“It can’t be.””

The video continued.

And the person finally turned toward the camera.

It was someone we all knew.

May you like

Someone who had been pretending to help us all along.

Someone who had been holding the key to the truth from the beginning.
