Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Buried
The room went silent.
I stared at Jonathan.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
My father looked wounded.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to do this.””
I looked at Jonathan.
“You don’t get to stand here after lying all night and accuse him.””
Jonathan didn’t react.
Because he knew something.
Something I didn’t.
My father stepped closer.
“Let him talk.””
I looked at him.
“Dad?””
His face was exhausted.
But determined.
“If there is something your mother knew about me, I need to hear it.””
That sentence hurt.
Because it sounded like a man preparing to lose everything.
Jonathan pushed the envelope toward me.
“Claire left this after she discovered the truth.””
I looked at the handwriting.
My mother’s handwriting.
Again.
Always my mother.
Always another secret.
I opened it.
The paper inside had only a few lines.
Emma,
If you are reading this, then the truth finally reached you.
Please remember something.
Your father is not the villain you think he is.
But he is not innocent either.
My hands shook.
I looked at my father.
He closed his eyes.
Jonathan continued.
“Claire discovered Daniel had been keeping a secret.””
“What secret?””
Nobody answered.
Then my father spoke.
“I knew Victoria was lying.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
His voice was quiet.
“I knew she wasn’t who she said she was.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
He looked at me.
“I found out months after we married.””
My grandmother looked furious.
“And you said nothing?””
“I thought I could fix it.””
The same excuse.
The same words.
I felt tears building.
“Everyone always thinks they can fix things.””
My father looked away.
“I was wrong.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Claire discovered Daniel had found evidence of Victoria’s past.””
My father continued.
“She had debts. False identities. People looking for her.””
“Then why did you stay?””
That question came from me.
Not angrily.
Just broken.
My father struggled to answer.
“Because you had already lost your mother.””
The room went quiet.
“I thought losing Victoria too would destroy you.””
I laughed softly.
But there was no happiness.
“You protected me by letting me live with a liar?””
My father looked like I had hit him.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
Silence.
Nobody had an answer.
Jonathan opened another file.
“But Claire discovered something worse.””
My grandmother looked at him.
“What?””
“She discovered Daniel wasn’t the only one hiding information.””
Everyone looked at Michael.
My uncle looked down.
Jonathan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Victoria.
“Not Michael.””
Then at himself.
“Not me.””
My skin went cold.
“Then who?””
Jonathan slowly removed a document.
“This was the original ownership record for the house.””
My father frowned.
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Jonathan placed it down.
“Claire discovered the house was never supposed to belong entirely to Daniel.””
My father looked confused.
“What?””
The lawyer pointed to a name.
A name that was not my father’s.
A name I had never seen before.
The original co-owner.
My grandmother gasped.
Because she knew.
“Who is that?””
I asked.
Pearl looked at the paper.
Her face turned pale.
“Your mother.””
I frowned.
“My mother?””
Jonathan nodded.
“Claire purchased half of this property before marrying Daniel.””
My father stared.
“I never knew.””
“That’s the point.””
Jonathan looked at him.
“Someone removed the records.””
Victoria suddenly whispered:
“No…”
Everyone turned.
She looked terrified.
Because she knew where this was going.
Jonathan continued.
“Claire discovered someone had been slowly changing legal documents around the family.””
My father looked at Victoria.
“Was it you?””
Victoria shook her head.
“No.””
For once, she sounded honest.
“I wasn’t smart enough for that.””
The room went quiet.
Then my grandmother whispered:
“She was.””
Everyone looked at her.
Pearl stared at Jonathan.
“You were the one handling the paperwork.””
Jonathan didn’t deny it.
And that was when everything changed.
The man who brought us the truth had also helped hide it.
My father stepped toward him.
“Why?””
Jonathan looked at the floor.
“Because I was paid.””
“By who?””
Jonathan looked up.
May you like
And answered:
“By Claire’s own family.””
