Chapter 13: The Face Behind the Mask

The video froze.

A single image remained on the screen.

The person sitting across from my mother.

The person whose voice had filled the room.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even breathed.

Because we all recognized him.

Jonathan Reed.

The lawyer.

My mother’s lawyer.

The man who had spent the entire night uncovering secrets.

The man who claimed he was protecting Claire’s final wishes.

My father slowly turned toward him.

“No.””

Jonathan’s face lost its calm expression for the first time.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My father stepped back.

“You knew.””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I stared at him.

The man who had held my mother’s letter.

The man who had opened the safety deposit box.

The man who had guided us toward the truth.

How could he be part of it?

My grandmother looked devastated.

“Jonathan.””

He closed his eyes.

“Pearl, listen to me.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

But full of disappointment.

“You were the last person I expected.””

Jonathan looked at me.

“Emma, I need you to understand—”

I interrupted him.

“Understand what?””

My voice shook.

“That everyone who says they’re protecting me is actually hiding something?””

The words hurt because they were true.

My entire life had been built around people deciding what I could handle.

My father.

My uncle.

Victoria.

And now him.

Jonathan looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

My father laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?””

He pointed at the screen.

“You were sitting across from my dying wife while she was afraid for her life.””

Jonathan’s jaw tightened.

“I was trying to help her.””

“Then why does she sound afraid of you?””

Nobody answered.

The video started playing again.

My mother’s voice filled the room.

“Jonathan, I know you’re involved.””

Everyone froze.

Jonathan looked at the screen.

Claire continued.

“You think I don’t notice the documents you move? The calls you hide? The information you give Victoria?””

My hands covered my mouth.

My mother knew.

She knew everything.

Jonathan whispered:

“She was wrong.””

But nobody believed him.

The video continued.

“I trusted you with my legal affairs.””

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“But you betrayed that trust.””

Jonathan reached toward the laptop.

“Enough.””

My father grabbed his arm.

“No.””

The old Jonathan disappeared.

The calm professional mask broke.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

My father stared at him.

“Then explain.””

Jonathan looked around the room.

At the broken tree.

At the documents.

At my mother’s face on the screen.

Finally, he sighed.

“I was pressured.””

“By who?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

“Someone powerful.””

My grandmother stepped forward.

“Who?””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

The silence stretched.

Then Victoria laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

“You really thought you were the smartest person here?””

Jonathan turned toward her.

“Be quiet.””

That was the first time I heard anger in his voice.

Not frustration.

Not professionalism.

Anger.

Victoria smiled.

“You’re scared.””

Jonathan’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

My father looked between them.

“You two were working together.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Jonathan.

“He was using me.””

Jonathan laughed coldly.

“And you were using everyone.””

The room exploded into accusations.

Years of secrets finally spilling out.

My father shouted at Michael.

My grandmother confronted Jonathan.

Victoria blamed everyone except herself.

And I stood there.

Watching the people who destroyed my family finally reveal who they were.

Then Jonathan said something that silenced everyone.

“The person you’re looking for isn’t me.””

My father narrowed his eyes.

“Then who?””

Jonathan looked at me.

And I immediately felt afraid.

“Emma.””

My heart dropped.

“What about me?””

He reached into his briefcase.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He removed a sealed envelope.

“I was told never to give this to you.””

My grandmother frowned.

“By whom?””

Jonathan looked at the envelope.

“By Claire.””

Everyone froze.

My mother’s name changed the entire room.

“You said Claire trusted you,” my father said.

“She did.””

Jonathan looked at me.

“Until she discovered the truth.””

I stared at the envelope.

“What truth?””

Jonathan placed it on the table.

“The truth about your mother’s final investigation.””

I didn’t touch it.

Because suddenly I was terrified of what was inside.

Jonathan whispered:

“Your mother wasn’t investigating Victoria.””

My father frowned.

“Then who?””

Jonathan looked toward the hallway.

Toward the dark house beyond the living room.

May you like

And said:

“Your father.””
