Chapter 15: The Family Secret

The words made no sense.

Claire’s own family.

My mother’s family.

The people I barely knew.

The people who had disappeared from our lives after her death.

My father stared at Jonathan.

“Who paid you?””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

I felt the room shift.

My grandfather had been gone for years.

A quiet man.

A distant man.

A man I barely remembered.

“That’s impossible,” I said.

Jonathan looked at me.

“I wish it was.””

My grandmother sat down slowly.

“I knew something was wrong.””

Everyone looked at her.

“You knew?””

Pearl looked exhausted.

“Not everything.””

She stared at the broken tree.

“But enough.””

My father shook his head.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Pearl looked at him.

“Because Claire begged me not to.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another person deciding what I deserved to know.

Jonathan continued.

“Claire’s father believed she had made a mistake marrying Daniel.””

My father looked offended.

“Why?””

“Because he believed your family was unstable.””

Everyone looked at Michael.

Jonathan continued.

“He wanted control over Claire’s assets.””

My hands tightened.

“So he changed the documents?””

“Yes.””

“And you helped him?””

Jonathan looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“Why?””

Jonathan sighed.

“Because I was young. Ambitious. I thought money mattered more than people.””

My grandmother looked at him.

“And now?””

He looked at me.

“Now I know what it cost.””

Before anyone could respond, Victoria suddenly spoke.

“Claire knew.””

Everyone turned.

“Knew what?”” my father asked.

Victoria looked at Jonathan.

“She knew about the documents.””

Jonathan nodded.

“She did.””

“And she used it against you.””

The lawyer’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria smiled.

“Claire wasn’t just collecting evidence.””

She stepped closer.

“She was setting a trap.””

My father frowned.

“A trap for who?””

Victoria looked at me.

“For whoever destroyed her.””

A chill ran through me.

Jonathan looked angry.

“She was supposed to leave the evidence with me.””

“No,” Victoria said.

“She was supposed to leave it with Emma.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

Victoria stared at me.

“Because Claire trusted you more than anyone.””

The room went silent.

Even after everything.

Even Victoria knew.

My mother trusted me.

Jonathan opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And his expression changed.

“What is it?”” my father asked.

Jonathan didn’t answer.

He slowly turned the phone around.

A message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

*You failed to destroy the evidence. Finish the job.*

My blood went cold.

My father grabbed the phone.

“Who sent this?””

Jonathan looked terrified.

Because he knew.

“I don’t know.””

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

Everyone leaned closer.

The image showed our house.

Taken from outside.

Taken tonight.

The broken Christmas tree was visible through the window.

And standing in the yard…

Was someone watching us.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

My grandmother whispered:

“No.””

My father looked at her.

“You know who that is?””

Pearl’s face went pale.

Because she recognized the person in the photograph.

And then she said the name that made my entire world collapse.

May you like

“That’s Claire’s brother.””

A man everyone believed had died twenty years ago.
