Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Fall

The silence on the line was absolute, heavier than the snow piling against the hospital glass.

Julian’s breath hitched, a sharp, ugly sound that betrayed the polished armor of his tailored tuxedo.

"Maternity ward?" he finally choked out, the arrogance entirely drained from his voice.

Elena didn't smile, but a profound, anchoring calm settled over her chest.

"Yes, Julian," she said softly, tracing the fragile curve of her newborn’s ear.

"I gave birth to a son three hours ago."

"That’s impossible," Julian snapped, though the sudden tremor in his tone suggested he knew otherwise.

"You were supposedly infertile."

"That was your convenient narrative, not my medical reality," Elena replied, her voice cool and detached.

"I have to go now, my son needs to rest."

"Elena, wait, whose—"

She ended the call, tossing the phone onto the bedside table like a piece of useless trash.

The screen went dark, severing her final tie to the man who had tried to break her.

Just then, the door to the VIP suite swung open.

Maya, Elena’s older sister, marched in holding two cups of black coffee and a terrifyingly sharp expression.

"I saw the caller ID flashing," Maya said, setting the cups down and crossing her arms.

"Tell me you didn't answer that narcissistic bastard on his wedding day."

"I did," Elena admitted, looking down at the sleeping baby.

"And I told him where I am."

Maya let out a low, predatory whistle.

"Oh, the great Julian Sterling is going to stumble over his vows today."

"He deserves worse," Maya added, stepping closer to admire her tiny nephew.

"He does," Elena agreed, her eyes hardening into something resembling crushed diamonds.

"But I don't care about his wedding anymore."

"I only care about protecting Leo."

"Julian will do the math," Maya warned, her protective instincts flaring.

"Six months divorced, a full-term baby."

"He will know this child is a Sterling."

"This child is mine," Elena corrected sharply, pulling the swaddle tighter.

"Julian stripped me of my name, but he will never touch my son."

Outside, the blizzard raged on, but inside the room, a new empire was quietly taking its first breath.
