Chapter 12 - A Serpent in the Garden

The morning sun poured into the sprawling penthouse, casting a golden glow over Elena's perfectly ordered life.

She stood in the kitchen, humming softly as she prepared a plate of fresh fruit for Leo.

Thomas walked up behind her, wrapping his strong arms around her waist and pressing a soft kiss to her neck.

"Good morning, my beautiful powerhouse," Thomas murmured, his voice thick with sleep and genuine adoration.

Elena leaned back into his embrace, feeling a profound sense of peace that she had never experienced during her miserable marriage to Julian.

"Good morning," she smiled, turning around to face the man who had helped her rebuild her shattered heart.

Thomas reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as Thomas dropped down onto one knee right there on the kitchen floor.

"Elena, you are the strongest, most incredible woman I have ever known," he began, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

"Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?"

"Yes," Elena breathed out, pulling him up into a passionate kiss before he could even open the box.

The diamond was stunning, a vintage cut that sparkled with quiet elegance, perfectly matching Elena's refined taste.

Their moment of pure bliss was abruptly interrupted by the shrill ringing of Elena's secure corporate cell phone.

She answered it, her smile fading instantly as she listened to her Chief Operating Officer on the other end of the line.

"Elena, we have a massive problem," the frantic voice echoed through the speaker.

"Victoria Vance has just launched a hostile takeover bid, and she's claiming to have evidence that you violated the trust's morality clause."

Elena's grip on the marble countertop tightened, her knuckles turning white.

She knew immediately that Julian was behind this desperate, pathetic attempt to claw his way back to power.

"Let them try," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm whisper.

She hung up the phone, the warmth of the morning completely replaced by the cold, hard instincts of a corporate warlord.

Thomas squeezed her hand, silently letting her know that she would not be fighting this battle alone.
