Chapter 11 - The Phantom Threat

The neon lights of a cheap Queens diner flickered ominously against the rain-slicked windowpane.
Julian Sterling sat in a cramped corner booth, tracing the rim of a chipped porcelain mug with a trembling finger.
His tailored suits had long been replaced by a faded gray sweater, his once-sharp features now dulled by cheap whiskey and endless regret.
The bell above the diner door chimed, cutting through the low hum of the late-night chatter.
A woman walked in, her immaculate white trench coat and designer sunglasses looking entirely out of place in the run-down establishment.
It was Victoria Vance, a notorious corporate raider and a long-time bitter rival of the Sterling family empire.
She slid into the booth across from Julian, pulling off her sunglasses to reveal eyes as cold and calculating as a winter storm.
"Look at what the great Julian Sterling has been reduced to," Victoria sneered, her voice dripping with venomous amusement.
"If you came here just to mock me, Victoria, you can leave," Julian muttered, not even bothering to look up from his lukewarm coffee.
"I didn't come here to mock you, Julian, I came to offer you a way back from the dead," she replied smoothly, resting her manicured hands on the sticky table.
Julian finally raised his head, a flicker of desperate hope igniting in his bloodshot eyes.
"Elena has complete control of the board, my father made sure of it before he pushed me out completely," he said bitterly.
Victoria smiled, a predatory grin that promised absolute destruction for anyone in her path.
"Your father was a brilliant man, but he left one tiny, microscopic loophole in that ironclad trust he built for your son."
"A morality clause, Julian, one that stipulates the proxy can be challenged if they engage in behavior detrimental to the family's public standing."
Julian scoffed, leaning back against the cracked vinyl seat.
"Elena is flawless, the media treats her like a saint, and she runs the company better than I ever did."
"Nobody is flawless, Julian," Victoria whispered, leaning in closer.
"We are going to manufacture a scandal so devastating that the board will be forced to strip her of the proxy."
"And when they do, I will buy out the majority shares, and I will put you back in the CEO chair as my puppet."

Julian knew he was making a deal with the devil, but the thought of seeing Elena fall from her golden throne was too intoxicating to resist.
He reached across the table and shook Victoria's hand, sealing a pact that would ignite a new war.
