Chapter 14 - The Gala Ambush

The annual Sterling Foundation Charity Gala was the most highly anticipated event of the New York social season.

Elena arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art looking like a conquering queen in an emerald green gown that swept the floor.

Thomas was by her side, looking devastatingly handsome in a classic tuxedo, his hand resting protectively on her lower back.

The paparazzi cameras flashed blindingly as they walked up the grand staircase, capturing the image of ultimate power and grace.

Inside, the ballroom was a sea of glittering diamonds and whispered conversations about Elena's recent engagement.

Just as Elena took the stage to announce a multi-million dollar donation to a pediatric cancer wing, the heavy brass doors of the hall burst open.

Julian Sterling strode in, wearing a sharp new suit paid for by Victoria Vance, who walked confidently beside him.

The orchestra stopped playing, and a heavy, suffocating silence descended over the elite crowd.

"I apologize for the interruption," Victoria announced, her voice amplified by a portable microphone she had brought.

"But the shareholders of Sterling Corporation have a right to know the truth about the woman managing their money."

Elena did not flinch, standing perfectly still under the blinding spotlight as she stared down her ex-husband.

"Security, please escort these uninvited guests out of the building," Elena commanded, her voice ringing clear and steady through the hall.

Before the guards could reach them, Julian held up a thick manila folder for the crowd to see.

"This folder contains proof that Elena Sterling illegally hid assets during our marriage," Julian shouted, his voice cracking slightly under the pressure.

"She violated the morality clause of my father's trust, and I am formally challenging her right to act as proxy for my son!"

The crowd gasped collectively, the sound echoing off the vaulted ceilings of the museum.

Elena looked at Julian, seeing not a powerful adversary, but a pathetic, broken man dancing on a puppet string.

She smiled, a slow, chilling expression that made Victoria Vance suddenly second-guess her entire plan.

"You always were incredibly predictable, Julian," Elena spoke into the microphone, her voice dripping with absolute condescension.
