Chapter 11: The Secret My Mother Took With Her

I couldn’t understand the sentence.

Not fully.

My brain rejected it.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus looked like he wished he could take the words back.

But it was too late.

The truth was already standing in the room.

“You were born during the hardest year of our marriage.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

He looked at the floor.

“Your mother and I were separated.””

The words hurt.

I had always imagined my parents as perfect.

Not because I remembered everything.

But because my father always spoke about my mother like she was the greatest person he ever knew.

“We were struggling,” he continued.

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“She moved away for a while.””

I swallowed.

“And then?””

“Then she found out she was pregnant.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked confused.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Because someone questioned if you were really mine.””

The room went completely still.

My heart sank.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That was the worst part.

“Dad.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Denise.””

Everyone turned.

Denise’s face changed.

“That’s not true.””

“You accused your mother of cheating.””

Denise shook her head.

“I was trying to help.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice was firm.

“You were trying to create doubt.””

I looked at Denise.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because your mother always had something I didn’t.””

I felt hurt.

“She had my father.””

Denise’s eyes filled with anger.

“She had everyone.””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“Mom…”

Denise continued.

“People loved her.””

The jealousy in her voice was unmistakable.

Marcus stood.

“But I chose your mother.””

Denise laughed.

“And that destroyed everything.””

I looked at my father.

“So I was the reason?””

“No.””

He answered instantly.

“You were the reason I stayed.””

That broke something inside me.

I wanted to believe him.

I did.

But after everything…

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

David looked at Marcus.

“What happened after Maya was born?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Your mother and I repaired our marriage.””

“And Denise?””

“She stayed around.””

I looked at Denise.

“Why?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because she became your mother’s friend.””

That surprised me.

Denise?

Friends with my mother?

It felt impossible.

“She knew everything,” Marcus said.

“What everything?””

“She knew our struggles.””

He looked at Denise.

“She knew where to hurt us.””

Denise shook her head.

“You’re blaming me for everything.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked to the desk.

He picked up the old envelope.

“There’s something else.””

My heart sank.

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

He removed another paper hidden inside.

“I found this after your mother died.””

He handed it to me.

I read the first line.

DNA results.

My hands trembled.

I looked up.

“Why do you have this?””

Marcus’s eyes filled.

“Because your mother wanted me to know.””

I looked down.

The paper showed the result.

A match.

Marcus Carter.

My father.

I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

But then I noticed something.

There was another page attached.

A second test.

Not mine.

Vanessa’s.

My eyes moved across the words.

And I froze.

“Dad…”

Everyone looked at me.

“What?””

I couldn’t speak.

Vanessa walked closer.

“What does it say?””

I looked at her.

The words felt impossible.

“Vanessa…”

She grabbed the paper.

Her eyes scanned the page.

Then she dropped it.

“No.””

Marcus picked it up.

His face went pale.

“What?””

David stepped forward.

“What is it?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

Then at Denise.

The room went silent.

Because the test results revealed something nobody expected.

Vanessa wasn’t David’s daughter.

May you like

And she wasn’t Marcus’s either.

Denise had lied about everything.
