Chapter 6: The Evidence Denise Buried

Nobody touched the envelope.

It sat in the middle of the room like something dangerous.

A small piece of paper holding twenty years of secrets.

I stared at it.

My mother’s name.

My family.

Everything I thought I understood suddenly felt fragile.

Marcus stepped toward the envelope.

“Denise.””

She moved it away.

“No.””

His eyes hardened.

“Give it to me.””

She smiled.

“You don’t get to control the truth anymore.””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“Mom, what is that?””

Denise ignored her.

“It’s something your mother found before she died.””

My fingers curled.

“My mother?””

Denise nodded.

“She discovered the truth about Vanessa’s father.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked confused.

“Then why hide it?””

Denise smiled sadly.

“Because once people know the truth, they stop being grateful.””

The words made my skin crawl.

Marcus looked disgusted.

“You manipulated everyone.””

Denise shook her head.

“I protected myself.””

“From what?””

She looked at me.

“From losing everything.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus reached for the envelope again.

This time, she let him take it.

He opened it carefully.

Inside were documents.

Old papers.

A photograph.

And a handwritten statement.

His face changed as he read.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Dad?””

He looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

“This is impossible.””

Denise crossed her arms.

“It’s not.””

Vanessa walked closer.

“What does it say?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

She grabbed the paper.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she stopped.

Her face became completely empty.

“What…”

I watched her expression change.

“What does it say?””

She looked at Denise.

“You lied to me.””

Denise’s face remained cold.

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You told me he abandoned us.””

Nobody moved.

She looked at Marcus.

“You told me my real father didn’t want me.””

My father looked at Denise.

“Who is he?””

Denise stayed silent.

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“Who is my father?””

The silence was unbearable.

Then Marcus looked at the document again.

And whispered a name.

A name I had never heard before.

“David Williams.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because…”

She stopped.

Her eyes moved to Denise.

“You said he was gone.””

Denise looked away.

“He is.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You knew where he was.””

The room became colder.

Marcus looked at Denise.

“What did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

My father’s expression changed.

“You told Vanessa her father abandoned her.””

Denise lifted her chin.

“He left.””

“Did he?””

No one spoke.

Then Denise finally said:

“He wanted custody.””

Vanessa froze.

“What?””

Denise looked at her.

“He wanted you.””

The words destroyed her.

I watched Vanessa’s face collapse.

“You told me he didn’t care.””

“He would have taken you away.””

“Because he was my father!””

Her voice broke.

Denise looked angry now.

“I was your mother.””

“No.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“You were scared.””

The room went silent.

Because she was right.

For the first time, Vanessa saw the same thing I had seen all day.

Someone choosing control over love.

Marcus folded the papers.

“This is what your mother wanted me to know.””

I looked at him.

“So Mom knew?””

He nodded.

“She found these documents.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

His eyes filled with sadness.

“Because she was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But all those secrets had only created more pain.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying silently.

The girl who destroyed my dress.

The girl who spent years making me feel unwanted.

Was now realizing she had been lied to too.

Then her phone buzzed.

Everyone looked over.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” Denise asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

I know what your mother did.

Below it was a photo.

An old photo.

Of Denise.

Standing beside a man.

And behind them…

Was my mother.

Alive.

My father took the phone.

His face went pale.

May you like

Because written underneath the picture were six words.

She didn’t die by accident.
