Chapter 5: The Secret Behind Vanessa

For the first time in my life, I saw my father look afraid of me knowing something.

Not afraid because he thought I would hurt him.

Afraid because he knew the truth would hurt me.

“Dad?””

He didn’t respond.

He just stared at the paper.

“Why did Mom mention Vanessa?””

The question hung between us.

Marcus sat down again.

His hands folded together.

For a man who always seemed unbreakable, he suddenly looked like someone carrying a weight too heavy to hold.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I need answers.””

He nodded slowly.

“You do.””

I waited.

He looked toward the window.

“Vanessa wasn’t supposed to be part of our lives.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the door opened again.

Vanessa stood there.

She looked different.

The confidence from earlier was gone.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus looked at her.

She froze.

Because she knew.

She knew something was wrong.

“Maya found the letter,” Marcus said.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What letter?””

“The one your mother left.””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then at Marcus.

“You knew?””

The pain in her voice surprised me.

Not anger.

Pain.

“You knew all this time?””

Marcus stood.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She stepped into the room.

“All these years, you knew?””

I looked between them.

I suddenly felt like I was standing in the middle of a story everyone else had already read.

“Someone explain.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“I can’t believe this.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You weren’t supposed to hear it this way.””

“Then how was I supposed to hear it?””

Silence.

My heart pounded.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And for a second, I saw something I had never seen before.

She wasn’t my enemy.

She was hurt.

“Ask him who my real father is.””

The words landed like a bomb.

I looked at Marcus.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Vanessa wiped her eyes quickly.

“You knew.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I knew later.””

“When?””

“When you were six.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me?””

Her voice rose.

“Everyone always says that.””

She pointed at me.

“You protected her by hiding things.””

Then she pointed at herself.

“You protected me by lying.””

I didn’t know what to say.

For years, I thought Vanessa was cruel because she hated me.

But maybe there was something underneath.

Something broken.

Marcus looked at her.

“Your mother wanted you to have a normal life.””

“My mother?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Denise?””

Marcus nodded.

“Before she married me, Denise was already pregnant.””

I felt my breath catch.

“So Vanessa…”

“Is my daughter,” Denise said from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

She had been listening.

Her face was emotionless.

But her eyes were filled with anger.

“You were never supposed to tell them.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You hurt Maya today because you were afraid.””

Denise scoffed.

“Don’t make this about her.””

“It is about her.””

“No.””

Denise stepped inside.

“It’s about you always choosing her.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Do you know what it feels like watching someone else get everything?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Mom…”

Denise continued.

“She got the father. The attention. The love.””

My chest tightened.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had spent years believing I stole something from her.

But I never knew she felt that way.

Marcus shook his head.

“That was never true.””

Denise laughed.

“You always say that.””

Then she looked at me.

“Your mother knew.””

I froze.

“Knew what?””

Denise smiled faintly.

“She knew Vanessa wasn’t your father’s biological daughter.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Marcus.

He closed his eyes.

“Denise.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“Let her know everything.””

My hands felt cold.

“Dad?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I found out after Vanessa was born.””

“Then why did you stay?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because I loved her.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Even after you knew?””

“Yes.””

A tear slipped down her face.

And for the first time, I understood something.

Vanessa’s anger wasn’t just jealousy.

It was fear.

Fear that she had never truly belonged.

Marcus looked at both of us.

“I raised you both.””

Vanessa whispered:

“But only one of us was really yours.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“Both of you are my daughters.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Denise smiled.

But it wasn’t sadness.

It was calculation.

“I guess it’s time you know the rest.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What did you do?””

Denise reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

“I kept this for twenty years.””

My heart started racing.

“What is it?””

May you like

Denise looked directly at me.

“The reason your mother never trusted me.””
