Chapter 13: The Last Message From My Mother

The box looked ordinary.

That was the cruelest part.

After everything we had uncovered, after years of lies and secrets, I expected something dramatic.

A locked safe.

A hidden room.

Something impossible.

Instead, there was a small cardboard box held together with old tape.

But my mother’s handwriting was on it.

And suddenly, nothing else mattered.

I reached for it.

My fingers touched the note.

For Maya, when the truth finally comes out.

My eyes filled immediately.

“She wrote this for me,” I whispered.

The woman standing in the doorway nodded.

“My name is Claire Thompson.””

I looked at her.

“You knew my mother?””

She smiled sadly.

“I knew her better than almost anyone.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Claire…”

His voice was full of surprise.

“You disappeared.””

Claire looked at him.

“I was protecting the evidence.””

The room became silent.

Evidence.

That word had followed us all day.

Evidence of lies.

Evidence of betrayal.

Evidence of a truth everyone had tried to bury.

I opened the box.

Inside were several items.

A small notebook.

A flash drive.

A photograph.

And a sealed envelope.

My hands trembled as I picked up the notebook.

The first page had my mother’s handwriting.

Maya, if you are reading this, then I’m sorry.

I stopped.

My heart broke.

I continued.

I’m sorry you had to learn the truth this way. I wanted to be there when you discovered who you were. I wanted to hold your hand.

Tears fell onto the page.

Marcus turned away.

Even he couldn’t hide his emotions.

But some truths are dangerous when people are desperate.

I looked up.

Everyone was listening.

Even Denise.

Especially Denise.

Claire watched her carefully.

My mother continued:

The person you need to fear is not the person who lies the most. It is the person who convinces themselves their lies are justified.

My eyes moved to Denise.

She looked uncomfortable.

The next page was about Vanessa.

Vanessa is innocent.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa looked up.

“What?””

I read it aloud.

“Vanessa is innocent.””

Her expression changed.

My mother had known.

She had understood.

She was born into a situation she never chose. Do not blame her for the mistakes adults made before she could understand them.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

A quiet sob escaped.

I looked at her differently.

For years, I had only seen the person who hurt me.

I never saw the little girl who had been lied to first.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not telling you.””

She wiped her tears.

“I’m sorry too.””

Nobody expected that.

Not even her.

The room became quiet.

Then I opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was one piece of paper.

A confession.

Not from Denise.

From my mother.

I know who caused the accident.

My heart stopped.

Marcus stepped closer.

“What?””

I looked at the page.

It was not Marcus.

My father closed his eyes.

A broken breath escaped him.

Twenty years of guilt.

Twenty years of believing he had failed.

And my mother had known the truth.

I kept reading.

Marcus arrived because I called him. I needed him to help me. I knew someone was following me.

My father looked at Claire.

“You knew?””

Claire nodded.

“I knew some of it.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire looked heartbroken.

“Because the person responsible threatened Maya.””

My blood ran cold.

“Me?””

Claire nodded.

“Your mother was terrified.””

I looked at the page again.

If anything happens to me, protect Maya. She is the reason I kept fighting.

My tears blurred the words.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

The person who caused this did not act alone.

I stopped.

Marcus noticed.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“There’s more.””

I continued.

Someone helped hide the truth. Someone close to us.

The room became silent.

Denise looked away.

But Claire shook her head.

“It wasn’t Denise.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Claire looked at Marcus.

“She was involved in other things. Money. Lies. Manipulation.””

Denise’s face hardened.

“But she didn’t cause the accident.””

Marcus stared.

“Then who did?””

Claire looked at me.

“I think you already know.””

I frowned.

“No.””

She pointed at the photograph inside the box.

A photo I hadn’t noticed before.

It showed my mother.

Marcus.

Denise.

And another person.

Someone standing behind them.

Someone whose face had been hidden in every previous story.

Claire whispered:

“Your mother found out the person she trusted most had been betraying her.””

I stared at the picture.

Then I saw it.

A ring.

A jacket.

A familiar face.

My breath stopped.

Because the person standing behind my mother wasn’t Denise.

It wasn’t David.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had been protecting me all my life.

Someone who had just spent the entire day telling me he loved me.

My father looked at the photo.

May you like

And whispered:

“No…”
