Chapter 9: The Confession No One Expected
I couldn’t understand what I had just heard.
The words repeated in my head.
She wasn’t the only person driving.
My father.
The man who had protected me my entire life.
The man who had held my hand through every heartbreak.
Was telling me there was something else.
Something he had hidden.
“Dad…”
My voice barely worked.
Marcus looked at me.
“I never wanted you to know this way.””
“That’s what everyone says.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
Everyone.
Always protecting me.
Always hiding things.
He lowered his eyes.
And that hurt more than anger would have.
“You’re right.””
The room became quiet.
“I was wrong.””
Denise crossed her arms.
“You should tell her everything.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Don’t pretend this is about honesty.””
She smiled.
“No. It’s about finally watching you lose control.””
I looked between them.
“What happened that night?””
Marcus sat down.
His hands covered his face.
“Your mother discovered Denise had been moving money.””
Denise looked away.
“She was planning to expose me.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“And you confronted her.””
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
He looked at me.
“I thought I could stop the family from breaking.””
I felt tears forming.
“But it broke anyway.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Marcus continued.
“Your mother was driving to meet a lawyer.””
“For what?””
“To file documents.””
David looked at Denise.
“Against you.””
Denise didn’t deny it.
Marcus continued.
“Denise followed her.””
My eyes widened.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“Not at first.””
“Then how?””
“I saw the car.””
The room became silent.
“What car?””
Marcus looked at Denise.
“Her car.””
Denise’s expression changed.
“She was following your mother.””
David stepped forward.
“And you did nothing?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“I tried.””
Nobody spoke.
“I followed them.””
My heart pounded.
“You were there?””
Marcus nodded.
“I arrived seconds after the crash.””
The truth hit me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes filled.
“Because your mother was still alive.””
I froze.
“What?””
Everyone looked at him.
“She was alive when I got there.””
The room became completely still.
I felt dizzy.
“My mother…”
Marcus nodded.
“She grabbed my hand.””
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“She told me to take care of you.””
I covered my mouth.
“Then what happened?””
He looked at Denise.
“She told me not to trust her.””
Denise’s face changed.
Marcus continued.
“She said Denise had caused the crash.””
Denise shook her head.
“Liar.””
Marcus looked at her.
“She died before the ambulance arrived.””
Nobody moved.
The pain in his voice was unbearable.
“I should have told the police everything.””
“Why didn’t you?””
He looked at me.
“Because Denise threatened you.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She said if I exposed her, she would make sure you lost everything.””
Denise laughed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Marcus stared.
“You threatened to take Maya away from me.””
“I was angry.””
“You threatened my daughter.””
Silence.
Vanessa looked horrified.
“Mom…”
Denise looked at her.
“I was scared.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You were protecting yourself.””
For the first time, Denise looked like she had no answer.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
Everyone looked over.
He checked the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He slowly turned the phone toward us.
A new message.
From the same unknown number.
You still don’t know the whole story.
Then another message appeared.
A video file.
Marcus opened it.
The screen showed a security camera recording.
A car.
A dark road.
And a figure standing beside my mother’s vehicle before the crash.
Marcus froze.
David whispered:
“That’s not Denise.””
I stared at the screen.
Because the person in the video turned slightly toward the camera.
And I recognized the face.
It was someone who had been in our house all day.
Someone none of us had suspected.
Someone who had been listening to every secret.
My heart stopped.
May you like
Because the person standing beside my mother’s car was…
My father.
