Chapter 12: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
Nobody spoke.
Not because there was nothing to say.
Because there was too much.
Vanessa stared at the DNA report like it had personally betrayed her.
Again.
Another lie.
Another piece of her life that someone else controlled.
“No.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“No, that’s wrong.””
David looked at the paper.
His face showed confusion.
“I don’t understand.””
Denise didn’t move.
That was the first thing I noticed.
She wasn’t shocked.
She wasn’t confused.
She looked caught.
Vanessa looked at her.
“Mom?””
Denise slowly raised her eyes.
And Vanessa saw the answer before she heard it.
“You knew.””
Denise stayed silent.
Vanessa laughed.
A broken laugh.
“You knew.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Denise.””
She finally spoke.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Vanessa pointed at the report.
“Then explain it.””
No answer.
“Explain why my entire life is a lie.””
Her voice cracked.
I had never seen Vanessa this vulnerable.
The girl who destroyed my dress.
The girl who always acted untouchable.
Was now just a daughter begging her mother for the truth.
“Who is my father?””
Denise looked away.
“Vanessa…”
“Who?””
The room shook with her voice.
Denise closed her eyes.
Then she whispered:
“His name was Robert.””
David looked stunned.
“Robert?””
Marcus frowned.
“Robert who?””
Denise didn’t answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You told me David was my father.””
“I thought he was.””
The words made everyone freeze.
“You thought?””
Denise swallowed.
“I was young.””
Vanessa stared.
“So you lied to me because you didn’t know?””
“No.””
Denise looked at her.
“I lied because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Denise’s eyes moved to Marcus.
Then me.
“Of losing everything.””
There it was again.
The same excuse.
Fear.
Always fear.
David shook his head.
“You let me believe I abandoned my daughter.””
“I was wrong.””
“Twenty years too late.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I spent my whole life hating him.””
She pointed at David.
“Because of you.””
Denise looked broken for the first time.
But then Marcus noticed something.
The old papers.
The documents.
He picked them up.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He studied the dates.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
I asked.
He looked at Denise.
“Robert.””
Her face went pale.
“You knew him before Vanessa was born.””
Denise said nothing.
Marcus continued.
“He worked at the same company as your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“It means your mother knew him.””
David stepped closer.
“What are you saying?””
Marcus looked at me.
“I’m saying this entire secret connects back to your mother.””
I felt dizzy.
My mother.
Again.
Always my mother.
The woman I remembered as kind and loving.
The woman everyone talked about like she was gone forever.
But every answer led back to another question.
Vanessa picked up the report.
“Why would Mom hide this?””
Denise looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
But this time, nobody believed her.
A sound interrupted us.
A knock.
Everyone turned.
Marcus moved toward the door.
“Who is it?””
No answer.
Then a voice came from outside.
“Maya?””
My blood froze.
I knew that voice.
Not because I heard it often.
Because I had heard it once before.
In my mother’s old recordings.
Marcus opened the door slowly.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Holding a small box.
Her eyes immediately found me.
And tears filled them.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody moved.
The woman looked at Marcus.
“She deserves to know.””
My father whispered:
“No.””
The woman looked at me.
“I was your mother’s best friend.””
She held out the box.
“And I kept the final thing she left behind.””
I stared at the box.
Because taped to the top was a note.
May you like
Written in my mother’s handwriting.
For Maya, when the truth finally comes out.
