Chapter 2: The Moment He Chose His Daughter

My father had always been the calmest person in the room.

That was what made everyone nervous when he finally lost his patience.

Marcus Carter wasn’t a man who screamed first. He wasn’t someone who made empty threats. He believed actions mattered more than words.

And standing in that bedroom, looking at my destroyed graduation dress, I saw something I had rarely seen in him.

Disappointment.

Not just anger.

Disappointment.

“Maya,” he said softly.

I looked at him.

My tears were still falling.

“Dad…”

He walked toward me slowly.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer at first.

My voice felt trapped.

Vanessa stepped forward quickly.

“It was an accident.””

I looked at her.

An accident?

My father looked at the black dye covering my dress.

Then he looked at the open jar in Vanessa’s hand.

“An accident?”” he repeated.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I didn’t mean for it to go that far.””

Marcus looked at Denise.

“And you?””

Denise lifted her chin.

“Marcus, don’t start.””

His eyes narrowed.

“I asked you a question.””

“She’s upset about a dress,” Denise said.

“Graduation is still happening.””

My father stared at her.

“That’s what you think this is about?””

Nobody answered.

He pointed at my dress.

“This isn’t fabric.””

His voice became quieter.

“This is my daughter standing here after working for something she wanted, and someone decided her happiness bothered them.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Dad, you’re making me the villain over a piece of clothing.””

That sentence changed something.

Marcus looked at her.

“You poured paint on her dress.””

“Dye,” Vanessa corrected.

The room went silent.

Even Denise looked uncomfortable.

Because Vanessa had just admitted she knew exactly what she was doing.

My father stepped closer.

“You’re correcting the word?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was angry.””

“Angry enough to ruin something she cared about?””

She didn’t answer.

I watched her confidence disappear piece by piece.

For years, Vanessa had always won.

If she wanted something, Denise found a way to get it.

If she made a mistake, someone explained it away.

If I complained, I was called sensitive.

But this time was different.

My father had seen it.

He had seen everything.

Marcus walked over to the hanger.

His eyes landed on Vanessa’s champagne dress.

Perfect.

Clean.

Expensive.

The complete opposite of mine.

Vanessa noticed.

“Dad?””

He reached for the dress.

“Don’t.””

Her voice changed.

A warning.

Fear.

Marcus picked it up.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

He looked at the champagne fabric.

“You protected this dress.””

Vanessa froze.

“What are you talking about?””

“You destroyed Maya’s dress, but you kept yours untouched.””

“That’s different.””

“Why?””

She had no answer.

My father turned toward the open jar of black dye.

The room became completely silent.

“Dad,” Vanessa said slowly.

Marcus looked at her.

“Do you understand what you did?””

She shook her head.

“I said I was sorry.””

“No. You said you were caught.””

Her face changed.

“That’s not fair.””

My father laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“Fair?””

He looked at me.

Then back at her.

“Your stepsister is crying in a ruined dress, and you’re worried about fairness?””

Vanessa’s eyes became angry.

“You always choose her.””

There it was.

The truth.

The thing hiding underneath everything.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“You always make everything about Maya.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“She’s my daughter.””

“And I’m your daughter too!””

The words echoed.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Marcus looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “being loved doesn’t require hurting someone else.””

She looked away.

Denise stepped forward.

“Marcus, this has gone too far.””

He turned toward her.

“No. It went too far when you walked into this room and watched.””

Denise became silent.

Because she knew.

She knew he was right.

I wiped my tears.

“Dad, I don’t even want revenge.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

I glanced at Vanessa.

“I just wanted someone to care that she did this.””

Marcus nodded.

“I care.””

Those two words broke something inside me.

Because for so long, I had felt invisible.

And in that moment, I knew I wasn’t.

Marcus lifted Vanessa’s dress slightly.

Vanessa took a step back.

“Dad.””

He looked at the black dye.

Then at her.

“Now you’re going to understand.””

Her face changed instantly.

“No.””

Marcus moved closer to the jar.

“Vanessa…”

“Dad, don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

And for the first time, she wasn’t acting powerful.

She was scared.

May you like

But before anyone could stop him, Marcus reached toward the black dye.

And Vanessa screamed his name.
