Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The room became silent after Denise spoke.

Not the normal silence after an argument.

A different kind.

The kind where everyone realizes something irreversible has just happened.

Marcus stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Denise’s face changed immediately.

She knew.

She knew she had said too much.

“I meant she should have stopped investigating.””

My father stepped closer.

“Investigating what?””

Denise looked away.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I interrupted.

My voice shook.

“But it’s always been about me, hasn’t it?””

Everyone looked at me.

“All these years, everyone kept saying they were protecting me.””

I looked at Marcus.

“But nobody trusted me with the truth.””

Then I looked at Denise.

“You knew my mother was searching for something.””

Denise stayed quiet.

“You knew she was afraid.””

Still nothing.

“And you never told anyone.””

David stepped forward.

“She wasn’t afraid.””

Everyone looked at him.

“She was preparing.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

David reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out an old envelope.

My heart stopped.

Another letter.

“I received this after she died.””

Marcus stared.

“From who?””

David looked at Denise.

“From your wife.””

The room froze.

Denise’s face went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

David handed the envelope to Marcus.

“She wanted me to have proof.””

Marcus opened it.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his expression changed.

I had seen anger on his face before.

But this was different.

This was betrayal.

“What?””

I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

“Dad?””

He handed me the letter.

I read the first line.

Marcus, if you are reading this, I am no longer able to protect Maya myself.

My hands trembled.

The next lines were worse.

Denise knows I discovered the truth. She knows about the financial accounts. She knows about David. She knows I found the documents proving she lied.

I looked up.

Denise was silent.

I kept reading.

I don’t believe she will hurt me directly. But I believe she will do anything to protect the life she created.

My stomach turned.

Marcus took the letter from me.

“She knew.””

His voice was barely audible.

“She knew Denise was dangerous.””

Denise laughed suddenly.

A cold laugh.

“You’re all acting like I’m some monster.””

David looked at her.

“You erased my letters.””

She looked at him.

“You would have taken Vanessa away.””

“You stole twenty years from me.””

“And I raised her.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You lied to me.””

Denise looked at her.

“I loved you.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Love doesn’t look like this.””

That sentence hurt Denise.

I could see it.

But it didn’t erase what she had done.

Marcus looked at her.

“Were you involved in the accident?””

Denise’s face hardened.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

Marcus noticed.

“So you know what happened.””

She didn’t speak.

The silence answered.

David moved toward her.

“You let her die.””

Denise snapped.

“Don’t pretend you cared about her!””

The words echoed.

Everyone froze.

Because anger had made her reveal something.

Something she didn’t mean to say.

Marcus’s voice became dangerously calm.

“What did you mean by that?””

Denise realized her mistake.

“I meant…”

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“What did you mean?””

She looked around.

At all of us.

At the truth closing in.

Then she said something that shocked me.

“Your wife wasn’t innocent either.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Don’t talk about my mother like that.””

Denise looked at me.

“You think she was perfect?””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“But she loved me.””

Denise smiled sadly.

“She loved secrets too.””

Marcus slammed the letter down.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Denise pointed at him.

“You want the truth? Fine.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Your mother found out that David wasn’t the only person hiding something.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

Denise looked at Marcus.

“She found out about you.””

My father went still.

I looked at him.

“What about Dad?””

Denise’s voice dropped.

“Your father knew more than he admitted.””

The accusation hung in the air.

I looked at Marcus.

My heart sank.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

And that terrified me.

Because my father always answered.

Always.

David looked at Marcus.

“What did she mean?””

Marcus looked away.

Finally, he whispered:

“I made one mistake.””

My voice cracked.

“What mistake?””

He looked at me.

The sadness in his eyes almost broke me.

“Before your mother died…”

A pause.

“I found out Denise was planning to leave.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“And I confronted her.””

Denise looked furious.

“Don’t.””

But he kept going.

“The night your mother died…”

May you like

The room held its breath.

“She wasn’t the only person driving.””
